I am a little over 15 years into recovery, since I decided to get serious about it. I’ve been married to a saint of a woman, Jeanne, since 1985 because of an absolute miracle. Together we have raised 3 sons and one awesome grandson. You’ll get to hear everyone’s story of how substance abuse recovery has affected their life at some point during this journey I’m sure. I work as the Director of a Young Adult Services program for Youth in crisis aged 18-24. I also have serve as an elected member of the Horry County School Board, that story is a miracle in and of itself. I attend Celebrate Recovery, a Christian 12-step program for my substance abuse recovery and am a member of Broken Chains, a motorcycle enthusiast group that is linked to an addiction program; you’ll hear more about them another time.
During each episode we talk about Recovery and to Real People in Real Recovery.
Recovery for Real was created to highlight the many differences in recovery as it pertains to each individual. When we operate under this premise, no one is excluded; we believe that what works for one person may not necessarily work for another and that is ok. For some, it's an addiction program, a Spiritually based program, a 12-step program, or some other substance abuse recovery method. This thought process means that there is certainly a way that will fit each and every one of us, recovery is possible for all.
Recovery for Real is a concept birthed out of my having the desire to stay in recovery by working my recovery daily. For me it's a Christian-Based, 12-step program for my substance abuse recovery; for you, it may be some other type of program for some other type of addiction. I believe there is a big difference between achieving sobriety and living in recovery. For me, achieving sobriety was the easy part. Living a life in recovery takes a little more work. It is my vision for this podcast to reach out across the vast expanses of the internet, connecting ideas and feelings that are conveyed through myself and our guests, that might just reach out and touch someone, anyone, and help them stay sober one more day. It is our goal to talk about and provide information on resources, addiction programs, books, and other podcasts that will help fill your quiver for daily battle against whatever demons are chasing you today. With any luck, we will be able to do this within a 20-25-minute time slot, making our time, not only productive, but efficient enough that you won’t want to miss an episode and will have the time to listen. We may have some guests that will be worthy of more time, but I promise you, those shows will be worth it.
